Scope:

This course is designed to prepare the candidate to function efficiently as a Vessel/Ship Security Officer onboard the vessel and/or onshore through company designations at the port facility by providing the candidate a comprehensive understanding of the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code and the Maritime Transportation Safety Act (MTSA). Topics emphasized in this course will provide VSO’s, CSO’s, and PFSO’s with a better understanding of how to:

  • • Maintain and supervise the implementation of a vessel security plan
  • • Assess security risks, threat and vulnerability
  • • Undertake regular inspections of the ship to ensure appropriate security measures are implemented and maintained
  • • Ensure that security and systems, if any, are properly operated, tested and calibrated
  • • Encourage security awareness and vigilance.

By developing a full understanding of all three security roles, the candidate will be a more complete security officer.

Once the course has been completed, you will receive your certificate and may be eligible for your Vessel Security Officer, Company Security Officer and Port Facility Security Officer endorsement.

A candidate who has successfully completed the required training of this course will have received sufficient information, instruction and assessment to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Vessel Security Officer (VSO), Company Security Officer (CSO), and Facility Security Officer (FSO), in accordance with the following training requirements and standards:

The mandatory training requirements in 33 CFR Part 104.210, 33 CFR Part 104.215, and 33 CFR 105.215; SOLAS amendments Dec. 2002, Chapter XI, Regulation 5, and Chapter XI-2, Regulations 1-13; Regulations and requirements defined in the 2010 STCW Convention and Code 1978 section A-VI/5, as amended, and in particular the duties and responsibilities with respect to the security of a ship, for implementing and maintaining a Ship Security Plan and for liaising with the Company Security Officer and with Facility Security Officers; A and B of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code; Maritime Transportation Act (MTSA) of 2002; IMO Model Courses 3.19, 3.20, and 3.21.
